A reminder about this months meeting.
German-American Resources for Genealogists
The best information on your ancestors is often found close to home. In this presentation Antje Petty will provide an overview of frequently overlooked resources from German-American communities that can yield important clues for family historians researching their German-speaking ancestors. She will also suggest strategies on how to prioritize, interpret and read these documents.
Antje Petty is the Assistant Director of the Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an interdisciplinary institute for research and outreach on German immigration to America. Antje shares the resources of the Institute with the community through talks, lectures and workshops. She has done extensive genealogical research on German-speaking immigrant families.

At my favorite coffee shop this morning I had a conversation with a friend who said her daughter as High School freshman is doing a required family history project. It was great to hear!
I suggested that if her child wishes to present her findings to our local Genealogical Society that it might help with public speaking and also as a way to bring together older adults and youth who share a common thread – family history. A learning experience for all.
October has been officially listed as Family History Month within the US. It is a time to remember our roots and celebrate our unique histories and identities. Contact me if you wish to research your family history or have hit a brick wall and want ideas on what you might do next.
Also remember to start from the present (yourself) and move back in time. In that spirit and also since Halloween is upon us soon, here is a picture from my past.

My dear Grandma, who would have been 97 yrs old this Month. On Left is her First Communion picture in DesPlaines, IL in 1927. On right is about 1922 with her oldest sister Mary Podrasky (a lovely lady too).
